Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun,  has approved N200m bursary and scholarship awards to 10,770 students of the state origin in higher institutions across the country.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Odubela, who said this, added that the amount was arrived at after a thorough overhaul of the payment process of the bursary, scholarship and other grants to students.

He said that the process was aimed at ensuring a transparent and improved payment system.

The process, according to Odubela, has helped the ministry to arrive at a correct number of beneficiaries instead of the initial 49,298 that applied.

“When I realised that if we want to increase the amount being paid to the beneficiaries, we needed to ensure that the figures were correct and covered only genuine beneficiaries. So, we asked the institutions to forward names of students of Ogun State origin, their bank account details, names and addresses of their parents and each student should personally append his or her signature on the returns. This has helped us to arrive at realistic figures of beneficiaries and the amount required,” said Odubela.

Under the new bursary awards, Ogun State students in the Nigerian Law School who were collecting N50,000 will now get N100,000 each.

“The pupils with special needs in primary schools will get N10,000 each instead of the N8,000 they were getting while each of their secondary school and tertiary institution counterparts will get N20,000 and N30,000 respectively.

“Final year students in tertiary institutions will get N10,000 each instead of the N3,000 they were taking while others at the various levels in higher institutions  will receive N5,000 instead of N1,500 paid under the old arrangement,” he said.
